The Orthopeadic and Traumatology Institute (IOT) is one of the institutes that compound the Clinics Hospital of Medicine School of University of São Paulo. Is among the largest Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology in Latin America and among major research centers in Brazil. In the IOT are treated annually in the emergency room of IOT more than 40,000 patients of whom 2100 are surgical cases.
Currently, the Orthopeadic and Traumatology Institute (IOT) occupies two buildings: the first with 8 floors and second with 4, totaling 5,000 square meters of built area. Both buildings are dedicated for the treatment of diseases of the apparatus locomotor, 7 specialty laboratories and a medical staff with more of 200 physicians, including: 86 orthopedics, 48 residents specialty and their own group of Anesthesiologists. It is also part this group: pediatricians, geriatricians, physiatrists, surgeons , Urologists and Cardiologists, which provide medical support for patients in orthopedic treatment.
Besides the attendance and treatment of patient , the staff of IOT are involved with the teaching students of School of Medicine, residency and post -graduation, fellows and outside doctors , offering different specialization courses for orthopeadic surgeon and related professionals from Brazil and other countries.

MICROSURGERY LABORATORY
The Laboratory of Microsurgery of IOT was founded in 1996, and since then has been equipped and prepared to provide all the conditions for training and development of microsurgical technique. Located at the Research Center at the 8th floor of IOT building, the training is performed with microscope in rats, although this process started using surgical gloves and ending with the technique of microvascular vessels. There is a monitor who check all the learning process . At the micro-lab we also develop research projects , related with microsurgery and orthopeadic topics . A vivarium allows the realization of experimental research . All the residents and fellows have specific period of training at the microsurgical lab , that associated with the surgical experience give a complete formation in hand and microsurgery.
